National Cathedral: Lands C’ssion Sued For Demolishing Building
The Accra High Court has issued a summons to the Lands Commission regarding the 2018 demolition of a two-story building complex in Accra.
The National Cathedral of Ghana, a project that has generated controversy since it began, was the reason for the Commission’s forced possession and demolition.
The Lands Commission allegedly broke their agreement to take possession of the building complex and demolish it, as stated in the writ of summons that Waterstone Realty Limited filed.
The accord was struck when the Commission cleared the way for the construction of the National Cathedral.
As a matter of fact, several structures, including judge’s homes and the Old Passport Office, were also razed in time for the project.
However, due to the state of the economy, some building owners who were entitled to compensation have not received anything. And interestingly enough, since then, the project has halted.
The claim is seeking an order from the Court to direct the plaintiff to pay a sum of $4.721 million in the market worth of the building at the time of demolition.
Additionally, it requests that the Court order the Commission to reimburse the owners $995,508.52 as the discrepancy between the property’s established market value and its real value.
