Tokyo Olympics: Transgender Athlete Laurel Hubbard Out of Weightlifting After Failing to Register Successful Lift

The New Zealander became the first openly transgender athlete to compete at an Olympics in a different gender category to the one in which they were born.

But after a failed attempt to lift 120kg and two failed efforts at 125kg in the snatch, her competition ended. Emily Campbell is competing for GB.

“I’m not entirely unaware of the controversy which surrounds my participation at these Games,” said Hubbard after her exit.

“And as such, I would particularly like to thank the IOC, for I think really affirming its commitment to the principles of Olympism and establishing that sport is something for all people, that it is inclusive and is accessible.”
