Ex President Mahama Promises Extra Holiday for Muslims When Voted ‘President’
In a groundbreaking announcement at the 63rd Annual National Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission in Kumasi, former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Mr. Mahama, has vowed to grant an extra Eid holiday to the Muslim community if elected in 2024.
This move aims to address the concerns of Muslims who miss out on the public holiday at the end of Ramadan due to the 29 or 30-day rule for moon sightings.
Mr. Mahama expressed his concern for Muslim community members who, under the current system, are unable to fully enjoy the public holiday at the conclusion of Ramadan.
Speaking on Friday, December 29, he outlined his plans to modify the Public Holidays Act to accommodate this change while ensuring that it does not negatively impact productivity in the nation.
During his address, Mr. Mahama highlighted the proposed modification to the Public Holidays Act, explaining, “We aim to address the issue where some of our Muslim community members are unable to enjoy the public holiday at the end of Ramadan due to the 29 or 30-day rule for sighting the moon.”
He further stated, “To do this, we will introduce an additional holiday to the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. We will, however, ensure that this does not affect productivity by modifying the Public Holidays Act so that Ghana continues to have the same number of public holidays per year.”
This promise from Mr. Mahama not only addresses the specific concerns of the Muslim community but also underscores his commitment to inclusivity and understanding of the diverse religious landscape in Ghana.
As the 2024 elections draw nearer, this pledge is likely to have a significant impact on the political discourse and may influence the voting decisions of the Muslim population.
