In a direct response to allegations of neglecting the poor, former National Lottery Authority (NLA) Director-General Samuel Awuku has released a comprehensive account of the Authority’s nationwide social interventions, highlighting critical projects aimed at improving sanitation, healthcare, and community welfare.

Awuku explained that the list of projects was compiled to demonstrate the NLA’s commitment to its core mandate of supporting the “needy,” countering perceptions of extravagance with verifiable evidence of impact.

Sanitation and Water Projects

According to the inventory, the NLA has funded the construction of 20-seater toilet facilities equipped with mechanised boreholes in deprived communities across all 16 regions of Ghana.
“These projects were a top priority for the NLA Governing Board to promote good sanitary practices and complement the government’s efforts in providing social amenities,” Awuku said.
Beneficiary communities include Garu, Zabzugu, Bomaa, and Aflao, among others, where the facilities are helping to reduce open defecation and improve hygiene.

  • Construction of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for the University of Ghana Hospital.

  • Donations of critical medical equipment, such as incubators and phototherapy machines, to hospitals in Kumasi and Tetteh Quarshie.

  • Medical outreach programs in the Oti Region screened more than 6,000 people for various conditions.

Shifting the Narrative

By publishing these details, Awuku seeks to redirect public attention from accusations of neglect to what he describes as the NLA’s grounded, impactful work.
“Our mandate goes beyond gaming,” he emphasised. “The NLA exists to improve lives, and these projects reflect our commitment to Ghana’s most vulnerable communities.”
