John Dumelo Criticizes New 10% Tax On Betting

John Dumelo, a Ghanaian actor and politician, has taken to Twitter to criticize the government’s decision to impose a 10% tax on betting winnings in the country.

In a tweet, Dumelo expressed his anger towards the government for failing to create jobs for the youth and imposing additional financial burdens on them.

The Ghanaian government introduced a 10% tax on all betting, games of chance, and lottery winnings in the country, as well as a 20% tax on the revenue of betting companies operating in the country.

Dumelo’s tweet read, “Create jobs, you won’t create. The youth have created their own jobs too ahhh, you want to tax their winnings…..continue. That day will come when the youth will rise against you. It will be too late.”

Dumelo’s criticism of the tax comes as no surprise as he has been an advocate for job creation for the youth in Ghana. In 2021, he ran for political office in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in the Greater Accra Region but lost to his opponent.

The introduction of the betting tax has sparked a debate among Ghanaians, with some supporting the government’s decision and others opposing it.

Those in support of the tax believe that it will generate revenue for the government and discourage young people from indulging in gambling activities.

On the other hand, those against the tax argue that it will discourage entrepreneurship among the youth, who have been able to create their own jobs through betting and other similar activities.

Some have also criticized the government for not doing enough to create jobs for the youth, making it difficult for them to make ends meet.

It remains to be seen if the government will reconsider the introduction of the betting tax or if it will stand its ground.

However, Dumelo’s criticism has shed light on the need for the government to prioritize job creation for the youth and ensure that they are not burdened with additional financial obligations.
