BREAKING! FIFA Set To Ask Every Country To Name A Stadium After Pelé
Fifa president Gianni Infantino declared on Monday that the organization would ask every country to rename a stadium in Pelé’s honor.
This implies that Ghana is not an exception, but it is unclear whether this request will be granted and which stadium in Ghana will bear his name.
Pelé, an 82-year-old three-time World Cup champion and more than 1,000-goal scorer, passed away last Thursday.
While in Brazil for Pelé’s funeral, Infantino spoke to local media iterating:
“We’re going to ask every country in the world to name one of their football stadiums with the name of Pelé.”
After the state governor objected to the concept, Rio de Janeiro decided against renaming the iconic Maracan stadium after Pelé in April 2021.
The body of Pelé was buried on Monday inside the Vila Belmiro stadium in Santos, where he spent almost his entire playing career.
On the day of Pelé’s passing, Infantino issued a statement that began:
“For everyone who loves the beautiful game, this is the day we never wanted to come. The day we lost Pelé.”
