2.5% VAT Increment: We’ll Reject Approval of Appropriation Bill

According to Mohammed Adams Supkaru, the Member of Parliament for Sissala West, the Minority would vote against the 2.5% increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) included in the 2023 budget statement when the Appropriation Bill is approved.
He claims that the Finance Committee is in charge of this proposal, and that the Minority will make every effort to defeat it.
On TV3’s The Big Issue with Roland Walker on Wednesday, December 7, he explained that the idea would worsen Ghanaians’ economic circumstances if it weren’t rejected.
As a matter of fact, the 2023 budget was adopted by the legislature on Tuesday, December 6.
After the various committees dealt with the other difficulties connected to some of the proposals, including increasing the VAT by 2.5%, the House has yet to pass the Appropriation Bill.
“The government will be granted spending authority through the appropriations bill.
“We are stating that we are not going to approve that,” Mr. Supkaru remarked in reference to the 2.5% VAT increase.
Moreover, Roland Walker questioned him on how the minority would go about doing that since they lack the necessary majority in the legislature to carry out their proposal. He responded by saying: “when we get there we will see whether we have the numbers or not.
“We are going to ensure it has been taken out because this is not the time to be imposing taxes. The Finance committee is going to look at it.”
