Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has declared his readiness to sign an anti-LGBTQ+ bill should it reach his table.

Speaking to a delegation of Members of Parliament from over 22 African countries and the United Kingdom, Museveni called on African nations to take the lead in rejecting the promotion of homosexuality, describing same-sex relationships as a big threat and danger to the procreation of human race.

The conference, which was attended by medical experts, aimed to enlighten participants on the causes of homosexuality and possible remedies to the vice.

The delegation led by a Ugandan MP, Sarah Opendi, during a courtesy call, thanked Museveni for his firm stand against homosexuality.

President Museveni also stated that the moment he receives the bill, he will convene a meeting with the Ugandan MPs to harmonize on it and see how best to protect the children from homosexuality.

The legislation, which has already been passed by Uganda’s parliament, is yet to be transmitted to the president for assent into law.

However, the anti-LGBTQ+ bill has roundly been criticized by development partners and the United Nations as draconian.

Many have expressed concerns over its potential impact on the human rights of the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda. This move by Museveni could have far-reaching consequences not just for Uganda but for the entire African continent.

The LGBTQ+ community in Uganda has already been subjected to significant discrimination and persecution. Same-sex relationships are illegal in the country, and those found guilty of homosexuality can face life imprisonment.

The proposed legislation seeks to further criminalize homosexuality, with penalties including the death penalty for some offenses.

Many international organizations and activists have already called on President Museveni to reject the bill and uphold the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda.

They argue that such legislation would only serve to further marginalize an already vulnerable group, and that it is important to promote tolerance and acceptance of diversity.

As the world continues to grapple with issues of discrimination and equality, it is important for leaders to recognize the importance of upholding human rights and protecting the rights of all members of society.

Museveni’s stance on this issue is likely to have significant consequences for the future of LGBTQ+ rights in Uganda and beyond.
