Second Chance: 8,000 Teachers Get Opportunity to Retake Licensure Exams

In a pivotal move, the National Teaching Council (NTC) has announced that the 8,000 teachers who fell short in the 2023 Teacher Licensure Exams will be given a golden opportunity to retake the exams in March this year.

Out of the over 20,000 teachers who participated in the exams, a staggering 8,000 did not meet the required threshold for licensure.

Dr. Christian Addea Poku, the Registrar of the National Teaching Council, expressed the Council’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that only qualified and competent teachers are placed in classrooms across the nation.

He addressed concerns about the perceived lack of job opportunities, stating, “We don’t regulate and license only public school teachers.

So, we expect that when people go through the system and they get licensed, some of them may get absorbed by the Ministry of Education or the Ghana Education Service.”

This initiative comes amidst a broader discussion about the role of licensure exams in the teaching profession. Dr. Poku clarified that the NTC’s goal is not only to regulate public school teachers but to uphold a standard of quality education in both public and private institutions.

The 2023 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) 2&3 saw a participation of 20,181 teachers, yet a significant number, 9,556, failed to meet the pass mark. This alarming statistic represents over 30% of the total participants.

The move to allow the 8,000 teachers a chance at redemption is seen as a positive step towards nurturing and empowering educators.

It not only emphasizes the importance of quality in teaching but also underscores the Council’s commitment to supporting teachers on their professional journey.

In the coming months, these teachers will have the opportunity to reevaluate and enhance their knowledge and skills, ensuring that they meet the necessary standards for licensure.

The decision reflects the NTC’s dedication to fostering a competent and skilled teaching workforce in Ghana, ultimately benefiting the country’s education system.
