Renal Unit at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Set to Resume Services
After months of closure, the renal unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana, is poised to reopen its doors to patients on November 6, pending any unforeseen challenges.
This eagerly awaited decision comes following a unanimous agreement reached during a meeting held on November 3.

Since May 22, 2023, the renal unit had been inaccessible to outpatients, leaving them with no option but to seek dialysis services at private healthcare facilities. The closure had resulted in considerable inconvenience and financial burdens on the affected patients.

A partial reopening occurred on September 27, accompanied by the announcement of a significant increase in the cost of dialysis treatment per session, jumping from GH¢380 to GHS¢765.42. This abrupt price hike elicited strong public backlash, prompting the hospital authorities to reconsider.

In response to public outcry, the cost of dialysis treatment was rolled back to its previous rate, and the unit remained closed to outpatients.

The swift intervention to address the affordability issue was welcomed by many who depend on the renal unit for critical medical treatment.

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, played a pivotal role in facilitating the unit’s reopening. He had instructed the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to take immediate action to resume services at the renal unit.

The impending reopening will bring relief to countless patients who rely on the unit for life-sustaining dialysis treatment.

The move to reopen the facility highlights the importance of accessible and affordable healthcare services, especially in the context of critical medical needs. This development also underscores the significance of prompt government action in response to the healthcare concerns of its citizens.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister is scheduled to appear before Parliament this week, where further details and clarifications regarding the reopening and the state of healthcare services in the country are expected to be discussed.
