NPA Takes Action: Petrol Pumps to be Labeled Based on Octane Grades

In response to growing concerns about the quality of petrol in Ghana, the Head of Quality Control at the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Ubeidalah Saeed, announced that the Authority is taking steps to address the issue.
The NPA has approved the labeling of petrol pumps based on their octane grades, aiming to provide clarity for consumers.
The move comes after numerous Ghanaians shared images of damaged spark plugs on social media, attributing the issues to subpar petrol in the market.
Ubeidalah Saeed, speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, acknowledged the problem and emphasized the NPA’s commitment to resolving it.
Contrary to claims of tainted petrol, Saeed stated that the fuel on the market meets the required octane levels. He suggested that vehicle owners might inadvertently be purchasing the wrong fuel for their cars, leading to performance issues.
Addressing the matter, Saeed explained the significance of octane levels in preventing car jerking and noted that testing for octane levels had been conducted on the petrol available.
To further assist consumers, the NPA has decided to label petrol pumps next year, indicating octane levels.
Ghana currently offers two grades of petrol: RON 91 (red) and the newly introduced RON 95 (green), which is considered premium petrol for high-performance vehicles.
Saeed’s revelation aims to educate consumers about the different grades available and guide them in selecting the appropriate fuel for their vehicles.
