FIFA Probes New Sexual Misconduct Allegations Against Zambia Women’s Coach

Zambia Women’s national team coach, Bruce Mwape, is facing a new investigation by FIFA over allegations of sexual misconduct.

Mwape, who has been in charge of the women’s side since 2018, is already being probed by FIFA over previous sexual misconduct allegations, which he vehemently denies.

During the recent World Cup campaign, Zambia was eliminated at the group stage after facing heavy defeats against Japan and Spain. However, they finished on a high note with a memorable 3-1 victory over Costa Rica – their first-ever win in the tournament.

According to The Guardian, Mwape has been accused of inappropriate behavior just two days before the final match. Several players reported that Mwape had allegedly rubbed his hands over the chest of one of the players.

Witnesses considered reporting the incident immediately but feared the potential impact on their selection for the last game. Subsequently, the complaint was submitted to a FIFA delegate who was present with the team throughout the tournament.

FIFA has acknowledged the official complaint and initiated an investigation into the matter. A spokesperson stated that FIFA takes any allegation of misconduct very seriously and has strict procedures in place for reporting such incidents.

The organization assures complete confidentiality for those who come forward and offers support and assistance to ensure their safety.

Prior to this incident, Mwape faced previous allegations concerning alleged coercion of players into having sexual relations with him to retain their positions on the team. The investigation also extended to other Zambian coaches and officials, including the Under 17 girls’ team coach.

One unnamed female player revealed the disturbing culture, stating that it was considered normal for the coach to have relationships with players on the team.

The gravity of the situation escalated when journalists were prohibited from asking questions about the ongoing investigation during the World Cup.

As the investigation unfolds, both the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president, Andrew Kamanga, and FIFA are expected to take appropriate actions if the allegations are proven true.

FIFA has a history of enforcing stringent sanctions, including lifetime bans, for individuals found guilty of misconduct.
