Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, provided the United Nations High-Level Panel on Security, Governance, and Development in the Sahel with assurances that ECOWAS was willing to establish links of strategic collaboration and equitable partnership.
On January 23, 2023, he made this statement while addressing the panelists at the ECOWAS Commission’s Abuja, Nigeria, headquarters.
In order to accomplish these goals during the course of the team’s four-year mandate, President Touray presented to his hosts the four strategic goals of the organization he represents.
Thus, to explore issues of regional cooperation, security in the Sahel and the Gulf of Guinea, as well as development concerns in the region, the United Nations high-level panel visited the headquarters of the ECOWAS Commission.
The panel, which was established at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2022, has been given the task of evaluating the situation in the Sahel in order to recommend actions to encourage international engagement and suggest solutions to the region’s complex problems with security and economic development.
