In a move to ensure transparency and accountability, President Akufo-Addo has instructed the reputable firm KPMG to conduct an immediate audit into the contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML).
The contract, aimed at enhancing revenue assurance in the petroleum sector, came under scrutiny after an investigation by thefourthestate revealed an additional contract worth up to ¢24 million per month awarded to SML.
The contract tasked SML with monitoring and reporting on fuel product diversion and dilution, as well as overall noncompliance in the petroleum industry—responsibilities that were already assigned to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA). Shockingly, SML admitted to making false claims about its services to the state regarding alleged savings.
The President’s directive includes strict terms of reference for the KPMG audit, reflecting a commitment to transparency in the execution of GRA’s contractual agreement with SML.
President Akufo-Addo further instructed GRA and the Ministry of Finance to cooperate fully with KPMG, providing all necessary documentation for the audit.
“The President has directed the Ministry of Finance and GRA to provide KPMG with whatever assistance they will require for the conduct of the audit, and has also directed the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Revenue Authority to suspend the performance of the contract, pending the submission of the audit report, including any payments presently envisaged under its terms,” the official release stated.
This audit marks a significant step towards ensuring accountability in governmental contracts, as the President seeks to uncover the truth behind the controversial GRA-SML deal.
