Ahafo Regional Minister Raises Concerns over Surge in Maternal Deaths

The Ahafo Regional Minister, George Boakye, has sounded the alarm regarding a concerning increase in maternal death cases within the region during the first half of 2023.

Addressing the Ahafo Regional Health Directorate’s 2023 Mid-Year Performance Review Meeting held in Goaso, Minister Boakye urged immediate action to curb this troubling trend.

Despite the unwavering efforts of healthcare professionals, the Ahafo Region has witnessed a substantial rise in maternal deaths compared to the same period last year, a revelation that has raised deep concerns.

Mr. Boakye underscored the urgency of the situation and implored the Regional Health Directorate to bolster its strategies and interventions to effectively combat this surge in maternal mortality.

Dr. Kwabena Boakye Boateng, the Ahafo Director for the Ghana Health Service, echoed Minister Boakye’s concerns.

In an interview with Adom News, he acknowledged the persisting critical issue of maternal deaths in the Ahafo Region, despite healthcare staff’s unyielding efforts.

Dr. Boateng revealed a troubling statistic: maternal deaths within the first six months of this year have surged from three cases last year to ten cases this year.

To tackle this disconcerting increase, the Directorate has initiated a comprehensive assessment aimed at uncovering the root causes of the rise and developing targeted strategies for its prevention.
