Mahama's Poor Fight Against Corruption Far Better Than Akufo-Addo's Best Performance - This Is Why

CORRUPTION FIGHT can’t lose its place on Ghana’s 2020 electoral agenda just because Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration has proved to be equally corrupt.

It’s one of the biggest banes to our development.

In 2016, it’s topical. Nothing has changed apart from those in government perpetuating worse of it. Their seeming silence over the subject is an admission that they’ve failed.

Mr Akufo-Addo promised to protect the public purse. He’s doing directly opposite of that. And, he must be held accountable. He’s taken Ghanaians for granted.

Comparing Nana Akufo-Addo to John Mahama, one can say without an iota of doubt that the poor and unsatisfactory effort of Mahama in the fight against corruption is far better than what we’re seeing of Nana Akufo-Addo today.

1. Victoria Hamah didn’t steal or misappropriate public fund but she lost her job under Mahama for telling somebody how much she intended to make in politics. That can’t happen under Nana Akufo-Addo.

2. However terrible the Gyeeda scandal was managed Abuga Pele and others were being prosecuted under John Mahama before Nana Akufo-Addo came to office. Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration didn’t expand the scope of investigations and prosecution to capture others who should’ve answered critical questions. In fact, Pele would’ve been cleared had that scandal occurred under Nana Akufo-Addo.

3. Transport Minister, Dzifa Ativor lost her job and monies were retrieved following the bus branding scandal. In connection to this, recently, Nana Akufo-Addo also sacked NYA Chief Executives, but without retrieving the monies involved in the traffic light repairers scandal.

Nana Akufo-Addo established the Special Prosecutor’s Office. That’s a plus for him. But, that office is now a waste of resources. It’s obvious Martin Amidu, the occupant could fight corruption far better as a private citizen than as a SP.

Under Nana Akufo-Addo’s nose, a presidential staffer took TIPS IN BUNDLES to facilitate mining operations. Had this happened in the previous administration, we would condemn John Mahama for it.

Mahama and the NDC should tell us how differently they’re going to fight corruption should they return to power.

Both parties should tell us what constitutional or institutional reforms they’ll embark on to enhance preventive and curative anti-corruption mechanisms to fight the canker in officialdom.

Being conspicuously silent on it means, both parties have not only failed but they don’t consider it an important issue anymore. That shouldn’t be accepted by citizens.

I insist that without relevant constitutional and institutional reforms, our politicians and their cronies will continue to take advantage of our flawed system to siphon our resources and walk free while they imprison young petty thieves on a daily basis.
