In a gut-wrenching incident that has left a community in shock, a two-year-old boy named Giovanni Reichert is fighting for his life in a hospital after allegedly being brutally beaten by a friend of his intoxicated mother.
The accused, McKinley Sloan Hernandez, 25, was entrusted with Giovanni’s care on the night of September 1, but what was supposed to be an ordinary night turned into a nightmare.
Giovanni’s mother, Stefanie Reichert, received a distressing text message from Hernandez, stating that her son had gone lifeless after a bath. Rushing to St Anthony’s Hospital, Stefanie was met with a horrifying scene of medical professionals desperately trying to save her son’s life.
Giovanni was later airlifted to a children’s hospital, with a GoFundMe page describing the incident as him being harmed by the hands of a trusted caregiver.
Hernandez, who allegedly watched over Giovanni and other children in an unlicensed childcare facility at her Lakewood, Colorado home, now faces serious charges of felony child abuse.
Stefanie Reichert revealed that Giovanni had suffered blunt force trauma blows to his head and body, the extent of which has resulted in multiple surgeries, including the removal of part of his skull to alleviate pressure from a brain bleed.
Describing Giovanni as a happy, healthy, and energetic two-year-old prior to the incident, the family is now grappling with the uncertainty of his recovery. The toddler is currently intubated and sedated, and doctors remain uncertain about the long-term effects of the injuries.
Reichert expressed her frustration with Hernandez, who has not taken responsibility for the incident beyond admitting to drinking while caring for Giovanni. The mother, overwhelmed with grief, stated, “I make up scenarios in my head all the time for the injuries he sustained, so I wish I knew.”
As the community rallies around Giovanni and his family, an arrest warrant has been issued for Hernandez, who was apprehended and now faces the legal consequences of her alleged actions.
The case has shocked and saddened the Lakewood community, serving as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of innocent children even in the care of those deemed trustworthy.
