Why Manchester United and Arsenal Won’t Make It to The Top 4
In the English Premier League (EPL), the competitive race for the top 4 position is getting hotter and unpredictable as the last matches of the season are being played. Manchester City and Liverpool have solidly established their roots on the table. The excellent performances of ManCity and Liverpool has reduced a 4-slot competition to only two. Tottenham currently sits weakly atop the 3rd position of the table, with 70 points and two outstanding matches to be played against Everton and Bournemouth.
It won’t be easy, but they have a good chance to maintain their slot if they are able to draw 1 and win 1 of their outstanding matches. As a soccer fanatic, I spent 4 hours of today watching the EPL games and trying to make predictions about the possible qualifiers for next season’s Champions League. The fact is that, I’m just anxious about things which don’t concern me. Anyway, it’s all part of learning and entertainment.
After carefully analyzing the teams, their amassed points and outstanding matches, I was shocked to discover that Manchester United and Arsenal are automatically out of the race for the top 4. Here is why.
Why Manchester United Won’t Qualify
It’s clear from the available results that Manchester United (now at the 6th position on the table), currently has 65 points, with two outstanding matches to be played against Cardiff City and Huddersfield. If they desired to increase their probability of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, they wouldn’t have lost easy matches unnecessarily. Their today’s match against Chelsea was the determinant.
Unfortunately, they messed up by playing draw. But it wasn’t the fault of the players nor the coach. It was the fault of their disastrous goalkeeper, De Gea. He continues to cripple Manchester United with worst performance. Assuming United wins their remaining two matches (which appear to be easy), that would amount to a total of 71 points. But, can they actually win both outstanding matches? Of late, I don’t trust Manchester United.
They should start preparing for next year; it’s too late for them to make it to the top 4. Chelsea currently has 68 points with two outstanding matches to be played against Leicester and Watford (two tough teams). If Chelsea wins 1 and draws 1 of their outstanding matches, that would give them a total of 72 points. That would be 1 or 2 points higher than Manchester United. If Chelsea relaxes, they will also be knocked out surprisingly by Manchester United.
Why Arsenal Will Not Be Among the Top 4
Arsenal lost their last 3 EPL matches. That includes their big loss to Leicester today (0:3). They currently sit at the number 5 spot with 66 points. Arsenal still has two outstanding matches to be played against Brighton and Burnley. That won’t be easy for them. Since Arsenal is now shaky in form, they might not win all their remaining matches. Assuming they win 1 and draw 1, that will give them a total of 70 points. They can’t beat Chelsea with that.
So, there you have you have it.
The top 4 teams are fixed as ManCity, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea.
By the way, Manchester City will take the Premier League. Painfully, Liverpool will miss their dream by just a point.
