VGMA 2019 – How Samini Walked Home with No Award
Reggae Dancehall Artist, Samini, had a shock of his life at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA 2019). The breaking news is that Samini Walked home with nothing yesterday. (not even a single award).
Unlike last year which brought good luck to the My Own hit maker, the 2019 VGMA came and bypassed Samini like a ghost. Throughout the ceremony, Samini watched with utter dismay as his dancehall rivals Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy took turns in taking recognition for their hard work in 2018.
The big question is whether Samini’s shinny days are now over. The Dagaati man released a couple of good songs in his Untamed album. Unfortunately, Samini’s nominated songs couldn’t secure him a single award. Samini got nominations under the following categories: Reggae Dancehall Song of the Year, Album of the Year (Samini Untamed), Artist of the Decade, Reggae Dancehall Artist of the Year.
Sadly, Samini lost Reggae Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year to Stonebwoy, Album of the Year to Kuami Eugene. Samini’s day at the VGMA was made worse when Sarkodie added fuel to his fire by winning the Artist of the Decade. Considering how long and how effective Samini has been in the music business, a lot of people tipped him to win the Artist of the Decade category. Well, get used to the results. The VGMA Board took all the voting rights under that category; the fans had no vote.
The event saw some of Ghana’s finest musical artists bag in some awards. The event was partially disrupted by chaos between Shatta Wale’s Shatta Movement and Stonebwoy’s BhimNation. Despite the needless commotion that ensued, the VGMA 2019 was a success. Artists who worked hard enough deservedly took home some awards. Some of the big winners of the award show include Kuami Eugene, Shatta Wale, StoneBwoy, Medikal, KiDi, King Promise and Wendy Shay.
Following the violence which erupted between Shatta Movement and BhimNation, the VGMA Board decided to postpone announcement of the winners of two competitive categories; the Artiste of the Year and the Vodafone Ghana Most Popular Song of the Year. This decision was probably taken to reduce the tension which surrounds the two important categories.
For now, let’s congratulate all winners. To all Losers, Better Luck Next Time!
