UN Begins Withdrawal from Mali: Tensions Rise in the Kidal Region

The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Mali, commonly known as MINUSMA, has initiated its long-anticipated pullout from two key camps in the volatile Kidal region.

This marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to stabilize the country and bring about lasting peace.

MINUSMA’s withdrawal from Mali’s northern region commenced with the Tessalit and Aguelhok camps, raising concerns about the future security situation in the area.

In response to the UN’s disengagement, the Malian army deployed two aircraft to the Tessalit camp. Unfortunately, these aircraft came under fire from rebel forces during the landing.

The Malian army swiftly responded to the attack, stating that one of the planes was targeted but successfully managed to land and leave the area after enemy positions were “neutralized” by the Malian air force.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the rapidly deteriorating security conditions that UN peacekeepers are facing, putting their lives in jeopardy.

UN Begins Withdrawal from Mali: Tensions Rise in the Kidal Region

Since August, MINUSMA has transferred four camps to the Malian authorities, reflecting a gradual shift in responsibilities. However, it is the withdrawal from the Kidal region, known as the stronghold of separatist fighters, that is causing the most concern.

Northern Mali has been a battleground for conflicts between the Malian government, a coalition of groups seeking independence (CMA), and the Al-Qaeda-linked group GSIM.

The UN’s departure from the northern region is scheduled to conclude by December 31 after a decade-long presence.

The departure of UN camps in this region has escalated rivalries among various armed actors, raising questions about the future stability and security of Kidal and its surrounding areas.

As the UN mission withdraws, it leaves a void that may require further international attention and diplomatic efforts to ensure a peaceful transition and prevent further violence.
