SWAG Honors Awuley Quaye Senior

One of the winners at the 47th Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards held at the Accra International Conference Center was legendary footballer Emmanuel Awuley Quaye, also known as “Foyoo.”

He was a former professional footballer from Ghana who also went by the name Awuley Quaye Senior.

He captained the Black Stars, the Ghanaian national side, to victory in the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in Accra and Kumasi.

He is the father of Lawrence Quaye, also known as Junior, and Abdullah Quaye, a national team player for Qatar.

Awuley participated in club football for Accra Great Olympics F.C. as a defender.

Addressing ‘Yours Truly’, he believed that a nation that does not honor its heroes is not worth dying for, and he wishes to thank Kwabena Yeboah and the SWAG members for remembering and honoring him at the 47th SWAG Awards.

Awuley Quaye claims that he is generally depressed but finds comfort in having disciplined children who go on to play professional football.

“During our playing days, only a few were lucky like Polo, Adolf, Quarshie, Kumi, Alhassan, and Razak were able to travel to Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, or UAE, but most of us loved Ghana, and we sacrificed a lot, but what we were promised after winning the African Cup for the third time and for keeps was not fulfilled” he emphasized.

It is terribly sad to sacrifice and not be recognized, remarked the top defender, who is currently limping.

To that effect, he praised SWAG and urged them to honor further stars who had performed admirably for the country.
