Real Madrid Reign Supreme In First Leg Victory Over 10-man Chelsea
In a highly anticipated clash in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Real Madrid hosted Chelsea at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
The game promised to be an exciting encounter with both teams in good form leading up to the match. However, the match ultimately ended in disappointment for the Premier League side, as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to the holders, Real Madrid.
The game got off to a blistering start with Real Madrid on the front foot, looking to take an early lead against their former manager, Carlo Ancelotti’s old club.
The home side’s early dominance paid off when Karim Benzema scored his 90th goal in the competition with a simple tap-in, giving the hosts a deserved lead.
Despite Real Madrid’s dominance, Chelsea looked dangerous on the counter-attack, and Joao Felix almost leveled the score with a well-placed shot that forced a fine save from former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
The second half began with a setback for Chelsea when Ben Chilwell was shown a straight red card for a clumsy challenge on Rodrygo.
The dismissal left the visitors with a mountain to climb, and it wasn’t long before Real Madrid took advantage of the extra man. Marco Asensio scored from close range after a well-worked short corner, leaving Chelsea with a mountain to climb.
Chelsea continued to battle, but they struggled to create any clear-cut chances against a well-drilled Real Madrid defense. Raheem Sterling came close to reducing the deficit late on, but his effort was saved by Courtois, who had an excellent night against his former team.
In the end, it was a frustrating night for Chelsea, who will have to produce a remarkable comeback in the second leg at Stamford Bridge to progress to the semi-finals.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, will be delighted with their performance and will feel confident of finishing the job in London. Ancelotti’s side will be looking to defend their title, and on the evidence of Tuesday night’s performance, they will be tough to beat.
