Prof Gyampo On Censure Motion: This Parliament Cannot Be Taken Seriously
Ransford Yaw Gyampo, a professor at the University of Ghana, has criticized the present Parliament, calling its members “toothless” and unqualified to carry out their duties.
He claimed that the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic was held to a high standard as an oversight body of the Executive by the new Parliament constituted as a result of the results of the 2020 elections.
“[But] both sides do not really appreciate the mandate that was given to them by the people of Ghana,” he highlighted on TV3‘s News 360.
“They don’t mean business and they are not to be taken seriously. They are more toothless than the predecessor institution that had clear dominance.”
Prof. Gyampo was speaking after the House struggled to advance a motion of censure against Ken Ofori-Atta, the minister of finance.
On Thursday, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, and the Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, put the motion to a vote.
But because the required two-thirds majority of House members were not reached, the resolution was defeated.
The resolution received support from all 136 National Democratic Congress (NDC) members of the House at the time, but the Majority members staged a walkout right before the secret balloting.
To that effect, Prof. Gyampo reprimanded the New Patriot Party (NPP) MPs, claiming that none of them currently possess the “boldness to speak to the prior viewpoint they articulated” due to their lack of political will.
He also criticized the Minority for breaking their word to reject the President’s nominees, including the Finance Minister, if they won re-election in the 2020 elections.
On that note, he iterated saying “This Parliament cannot be taken seriously.”
