In a bid to express solidarity with Niger, which recently witnessed a military coup and is now facing the possibility of a West African military intervention, the Malian army announced the dispatch of a joint official delegation to Niamey.

Burkina Faso is also participating in this mission, joining forces with Mali to show their support for their “brotherly people” in Niger.

The delegation, led by the Malian minister Abdoulaye Maïga, who is a prominent figure within the Malian junta, is expected to arrive in Niger on Monday, as confirmed by Nigerien Foreign Affairs.

The purpose of this visit is to demonstrate the unwavering support of Mali and Burkina Faso to the people of Niger during this challenging period.

The timing of the announcement holds particular significance, coming right after the expiration of an ultimatum set by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the Nigerien soldiers.

The ultimatum, which demanded the restoration of ousted president Mohamed Bazoum, passed at midnight on Sunday. ECOWAS had warned of the possibility of using force should the deadline be ignored.

However, in response to the looming threat of military intervention, both Mali and Burkina Faso issued a joint statement cautioning that such an action would be deemed a “declaration of war.” Given their own recent experiences with forceful power takeovers in 2020 and 2022, the two nations are expressing their firm stance against any external military involvement in Niger’s internal affairs.

The situation in Niger remains tense as the political landscape undergoes significant changes. The military coup in late July has brought uncertainty to the country, and the threat of a West African military intervention adds further complexity to the situation.

As the joint delegation from Mali and Burkina Faso arrives in Niamey, the international community closely watches the developments in Niger. The outcomes of diplomatic efforts and ECOWAS’ response to the coup will undoubtedly shape the future of the region and the security of its people.

In the face of this crisis, neighboring countries’ solidarity missions and diplomatic engagements take center stage in attempting to find a peaceful resolution to the turmoil in Niger. The joint delegation’s visit represents an effort to foster dialogue and cooperation among regional nations, highlighting the importance of unity and stability in West Africa.
