The Impending China-Taiwan Confrontation Will Have A Greater Impact On Ghana: Oppong Nkrumah
Despite the disastrous effects of the Russia-Ukraine war, which the government has recognized as one of the main causes of Ghana’s economic crisis, Minister of Information Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has warned of a potential “third problem” that might exacerbate the country’s economy.
Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah stated his dissatisfaction with the Ghanaian media for failing to cover China’s potential annexation of Taiwan, a topic that worries other nations.
Instead, requests are being made for the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to take responsibility and express regret to Ghanaians for the economic disaster that occurred under his administration.
During his State Address on the economy on October 30, prominent figures in the nation—including broadcaster Nana Aba Anamoah—called for Akufo-Addo to apologize to the good people of Ghana.
However, in response to these calls on Asempa FM, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said that the government was not to blame for the “mess.”
The impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on the world economy was quickly brought up once more by him.
He stated as follows:
“The president admitted that we are in crisis. There was a part in his speech where he noted that we can’t take lightly the situation despite the global crisis…some people were expecting something different and let’s not reduce the conversation to that. They wanted to hear the president take the blame and apologize.
“There is a third problem coming, do you know that China has extended the tenure of office for president Xi Jinping?
They have extended it by an extra five years…his attempt to annex Taiwan. If indeed China carries on with its plans, its case will be similar to Russia-Ukraine. Can you imagine the damage, especially with the increase in crude oil prices? If indeed China attacks Taiwan, what will be the implication?” he asked.
As he raised the alarm, the Minister added:
“News outlets in other countries are analyzing the implication this possible attack will have on them but in our case, we haven’t taken a look at it but when it happens and we spell out the implications they will say it is pure fabrications but these are the realities in the world we live in. It is therefore not a matter of the president accepting blame because that’s not the matter of fact.”
Background
The Chinese are attempting to regain complete control of the island of Taiwan, which was previously under their rule in the 17th century.
Xi Jinping, the president of China, wants Taiwan and China to “reunite.” Apparently, it has not been ruled out that force will be used to carry out this takeover.
