NUGS endorses ‘Year of Reading’ campaign

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has endorsed 2019 Year of Reading campaign, an initiative by the Ghana Library Authority in partnership with other stakeholders to promote and encourage the youth to develop the habit of reading.

The First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo on February 19 officially launched and declared 2019 as the Year of Reading stressing that knowledge can only be acquired through reading.

According to her, studies have revealed that many children in sub-Saharan Africa struggle at the lower primary level to read in the official or any local language, and instances where someone is able to read, they do not understand what they read hence the need to cultivate the habit of reading in children.

In a press statement signed by the President of NUGS, Tinkaro Asare Osei urged the youth and students of the country to take advantage of the initiative to develop their passion and love towards reading.

“We encourage students and youth of the country to be fully involved since this awareness creation towards reading will go a long way at developing the human resources of the country”, he said.

The NUGS President further called on all corporate institutions and communities to get involved in the initiative for the betterment of education in this country.

High School Students In Kumasi Caught Singing ”Free SHS, 419” After Paying For The 2020 WASSCE Fees

A video trending online shows Senior High School students in Kumasi singing a newly composed song to ridicule the Free Senior High School program.

According to reports, the video was recorded in one of the Senior High Schools in the Ashanti Region a few days ago.

 

This came to light after the president announced that the government had absorbed WASSCE registration for all Senior School Students for the year 2020.

Addressing the nation as final year SHS and second year Gold Track students were preparing to return to school, the President indicated that 75.4 million cedis will be channeled towards that endeavour.

But new information from the Ghana Education Service reveals that the president’s assertion was not 100% true.

But the Head of School Examinations Administration Department of the Ghana Office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), Godfried Addo has revealed that though this is true, there were some exceptions.

Mr. Godfried went on to clarify that the government’s absorption of the 2020 WASSCE fees covered only students in recognized educational institutions and not private High Schools.

Reacting to this, some students came up with their own songs to describe how they feel about the ‘Free SHS’ as it is not ‘FREE’ after all.

Anas Aremeyaw Anas, Ghanaian undercover journalist has released the full video of the much anticipated latest exposé dubbed the ‘Corona quacks and thieves in Ghana’.

The exposé focuses on unveiling fake doctors who have a claim to have a potent cure for the fast-spreading and deadly COVID-19.

However, the FDA Boss, Delese Mimi Darko was spotted in the said video going round on social media.

In the Video, Anas was seen in the office of the FDA Boss whom he had gone to meet regarding his inquiry to know whether a supposed COVID-19 tonic was duly registered with the FDA or not.
