Eye Infections Are More Likely When There Is Environmental Pollution: GOA Warns
The Ghana Optometric Association (GOA) has issued a warning that environmental pollution, which includes the emission of hazardous substances into the sky, including smoke, raises the risk of eye diseases.
Long-term exposure to air pollution can result in eye redness, blisters, inflammation, and occasionally mucus accumulating around the eyeballs, according to Dr. Kwame Oben Nyarko, GOA’s public relations officer.
On the “GNA-GOA My Eyes! “ campaign platform of the Ghana News Agency/Ghana Optometric Association, Dr. Oben-Nyarko stated: “The most dangerous air pollution and eye health abnormalities include cataracts and cancer.”
Moreover, speaking on “red alarms among kids with eye disorders,” Dr. Oben-Nyarko, who is also the CEO of Third Eyecare and Vision Centre, stated that poor air quality contains dangerous gases like carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and coarse dust particles.
In light of this, he pointed out that allergic environments may contribute to children’s eye issues.
Due to hazardous poisons and abrasive dust particles present in an allergic environment brought on by air pollution, many people, especially youngsters, have complained of their eyes being red.
According to him, illnesses that cause redness of the eyes result in a yellowish or colorless fluid around the corners of the eyes, which mostly happen during certain seasons.
“This condition affects the pupils in children as well and needs a thorough eye examination instantly,” he iterated.
Moreover, Dr. Oben-Nyarko also explained that allergies can also cause itchy eyes, making it urgent to seek treatment for children who are in allergic or dangerous environments.
According to him, constant headaches and complaints of itchy eyes are two more warning signs that parents, teachers, and guardians should watch out for in kids.
