ECG Upgrades Prepaid Meters in the Tema Metropolitan Area
In a bid to enhance customer experience and keep up with technological advancements, the Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated a comprehensive mass meter replacement project.
The primary objective is to replace outdated prepaid meters, particularly those utilizing cards, with modern smart prepaid meters. Unlike their predecessors, these new meters eliminate the need for intermediary cards, ushering in a more efficient and convenient method of electricity credit management.
The previous system required customers to load credit onto specific cards, which were then swiped into the meter to activate the credit for use. The smart prepaid meters, however, streamline this process. Once customers purchase credit, it is directly loaded onto the meter, bypassing the necessity for physical cards altogether.
The project will target customers in the Tema Metropolis, Prampram, Afienya, Nungua, and Ashaiman areas, covering those using older versions of prepaid meters.
Sakyiwaa Mensah, the Tema Regional PRO for ECG, emphasized the scope of the project during an interview on Obonu FM. She clarified that customers undergoing meter replacements would not incur any costs, including potential re-routing expenses.
The transition aims to simplify the credit loading process and reduce the common issues associated with card-based systems, such as lost or damaged cards.
Nii Kwei Codjoe, the Marketing Officer for ECG in the Tema Region, issued a caution to customers during the same program. He urged vigilance against potential fraud attempts, highlighting that unscrupulous individuals often exploit such projects to deceive unsuspecting customers.
Codjoe emphasized that ECG field workers do not accept payments on-site, underscoring the organization’s commitment to a cashless system where all transactions must occur digitally.
The switch from postpaid to prepaid meters was explained by the ECG Team as a strategic response to evolving technology trends. The deployment of smart prepaid meters aligns the company with the dynamic landscape of technological advancements, providing customers with added convenience.
The elimination of physical cards in the new meters is expected to mitigate issues related to card loss and replacements.
As the project progresses, the ECG Team appeals to the general public to cooperate with field workers, ask questions if uncertain, and demand to see identification cards where necessary.
The initiative marks a significant step forward in the power distribution sector, demonstrating ECG’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction.
