JUST IN: Dr Eric Nkansah Affirmed As Director General of GES
Despite fierce opposition from pretertiary teacher unions, Dr. Eric Nkansah, who has served as the interim Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) since October 2022, has been confirmed as the substantive Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
In a letter dated January 4, 2023, Angela Frimpomaa Nkansah, interim director of GES’s Human Resource Management Department (HRMD), instructed all regional GES directors to take note that management had formally confirmed Dr. Nkansah as the service’s director general.
“Management wishes to inform you that Dr. Eric Nkansah Ag. Director General has officially been confirmed as the Director General of the Service.
In effect, all correspondence and memoranda should be addressed as such. Congratulations to Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director General, Ghana Education Service!” the letter pointed out.
Background
Dr. Nkansah was named interim director general by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in October 2022. The date of his appointment was October 19, 2022.
On November 4, 2022, however, after the President failed to revoke his appointment, three teacher unions—the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), which opposed his appointment on the grounds that he was a banker and had not advanced through the ranks of GES—declared a national strike.
On November 11, 2022, however, they ended the strike when the National Labour Commission (NLC) obtained a restraining order against them, attributable to the strike.
