Covid-19 Vaccines Have Not Expired: Ghana Health Service Clears The Air
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has urged the general public to ignore rumors that the organization plans to vaccinate individuals with outdated medications for its upcoming immunization phase.
For those who have not yet had a full or partial immunization against COVID-19, the service has announced December 14 to December 18, 2022, as the new vaccination dates.
The Pfizer vaccine, which will be used for this round of inoculation, has a life span of 15 months, not 12, as some media outlets have stated.
At a media appearance, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the director general of GHS, urged all unvaccinated residents to join the effort to prevent instances of COVID-19 during and after the holiday season.
On that note, he iterated saying:
“It normally will take years to develop vaccines, because we are waiting for stability to see the shelf life because this is the situation the World has to come up with the vaccine, so we have been given different shelf lives, so we continue to check for stability.
“So as the time approaches, and stability is still there, World Health Organisation (WHO) and Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) extend the vaccine, so the current vaccine expiry for Pfizer is 15 months and not 12 months as stated.
So this issue that we are administering expired vaccines is not true, in 15 months’ time if it remains stable, the WHO and other regulatory bodies will extend its use because it’s safe,” Dr. Kuma- Aboagye highlighted.
