Black Meteors Eye Olympic Qualification with Pre- AFCON Friendlies
Ghana’s U23 football team, the Black Meteors, are set to take part in two international friendlies as part of their preparation for the upcoming 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The news was confirmed by Frederick Acheampong, the chairman of the team’s management committee.
The Black Meteors recently made headlines by securing their qualification for the Olympic qualifying tournament. They achieved this feat by defeating Algeria over two legs in the final round of qualifiers last month.
The team is now aiming to qualify for the Olympic Games in 2024, something they have not achieved since 2004.
With the AFCON tournament just around the corner, the Black Meteors are looking to put in some solid preparation. Acheampong stated that the team will be well-prepared for the tournament, which will be held in Morocco, with the help of the two international friendlies.
“We are looking to play some international friendlies. A minimum of two matches before we enter into the tournament. If anything is confirmed, we will make it public,” Acheampong said in an interview with Citi Sports.
The announcement of the international friendlies is a welcome development for the Black Meteors. The team will be looking to build on their recent success and continue to make strides towards their ultimate goal of qualifying for the Olympic Games.
The Black Meteors have a rich history in international football. The team won the bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and finished as runners-up in the 1993 U20 World Cup.
They have also had several notable players over the years, including current Black Stars captain Andre Ayew and former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien.
As the Black Meteors continue to make waves in international football, their upcoming international friendlies will be an opportunity for fans to see the team in action and assess their progress ahead of the AFCON tournament.
With Ghana football fans eagerly awaiting news of the friendlies, the Black Meteors will be looking to put on a show and build momentum ahead of what promises to be an exciting AFCON tournament.
