Achimota School Rastafarian Excels with 8 As in WASSCE
In a remarkable turn of events, Tyrone Iras Marhguy, one of the students embroiled in the Achimota School admission controversy in 2021, has emerged victorious by excelling in the recently concluded West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The science student from Achimota School achieved an impressive feat by securing 8 As in the 2023 edition of the examination.
A video circulating on social media captured the moment of jubilation as Tyrone and his peers eagerly gathered around a computer to check their results after the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) released them nationwide. The ecstatic reactions echoed the joyous celebration of Tyrone’s outstanding academic accomplishment.
This success comes after Tyrone Marhguy, along with another student, contested Achimota School’s denial of their admission, citing their Rastafarian hairstyle as a violation of the school’s code of conduct.
The legal battle involved the Achimota School Board of Governors, the Minister of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and the Attorney General. The High Court ruled on May 31, 2021, directing the school to admit the students.
Despite the initial challenges, Tyrone Marhguy’s determination prevailed. Unlike his counterpart, Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea, who secured a scholarship at Ghana International School, Tyrone returned to Achimota School and, just hours after enrollment, sat for his end-of-term examination in June 2021.
Tyrone’s journey from adversity to excellence serves as a testament to resilience and determination. His outstanding performance in the WASSCE not only reflects personal triumph but also highlights the importance of embracing diversity and fostering an inclusive educational environment.
