Argentina defeated Australia to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals after Lionel Messi had a magical performance in his 1,000th career game.

Messi, 35, was making his 119th appearance for his nation, and they relied on his skill to get them past the first round and into Friday’s tantalizing match against the Netherlands.
