Ghana Card Registration Scandal: 10 NIA Employees Fired for Extortion
Ten officials of the National Identification Authority (NIA) have been terminated from their positions following a thorough investigation into allegations of misconduct and extortion during the registration process for the Ghana Card.
The NIA revealed that the conduct of these employees directly contradicted its established operational protocols. The actions in question were committed during their official responsibilities concerning the registration of citizens for the Ghana Card.
The decision to dismiss these officials was reached after a comprehensive inquiry led by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
The investigation process included the suspension of the implicated employees, the formation of a Disciplinary Committee of Inquiry to ensure fair proceedings for each officer, and the subsequent approval of the committee’s findings by NIA management.
The terminated officials were found to have solicited and accepted unauthorized fees from individuals seeking the Ghana Card, alongside manipulating the registration system for personal gain.
These acts of misconduct were identified across several NIA offices, including the Head Office in Accra, the Subin Sub-Metro District Office in Kumasi, the Western Regional Office in Takoradi, the Registrar General’s Department Office in Accra Central, the Adentan Municipal Office, and the La-Nkwantanang Municipal Office.
By engaging in these unethical practices, the dismissed employees not only violated the core principles of transparency and integrity upheld by the NIA but also undermined the agency’s reputation and goals.
The NIA’s decisive response underscores its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct. The termination of these officials serves as a reminder that any deviation from these principles will not be tolerated.
